Diane,
When I tried a thru-hike in 2000, I was so proud of the first time I "hitched" and was describing the experience later to hiker friends. One brought me down a peg by saying, "that wasn't hitching, that was begging!"
Whatever. What I did is wait outside a gas station/mini-mart & watch for a "friendly-looking woman." Sure enough, one came in to get cofffee, I explained my situation &, of course, she was at first taken aback, but then decided it was safe to talk to me and offered me a ride. I find it works best to make a friend, ask around in town for someone who provides rides, etc. (And there was a couple of times that I was really intent on hitching with just anyone and it turned out alright. Mostly I find that people are more afraid of you, that you are of them.)
See you at the Kick-off!
