I've used both trailjournals and postholer, and they are both great sites.
They both have there pluses and minuses. I currently prefer postholer b/c I
can post my journal entries directly from my pda while hiking. This is a
GREAT feature. The site is also faster than trailjournals, and recently TJ has
had a tendency to be down quite a bit. On the other hand, I like the fact
that I can embed pictures within the body of the TJ journal entries, but this
is minor when compared to the advantages of Postholer. Postholer really is a
great site. Scott's response to inquiries and requests for changes has been
nothing but exceptional, so I definitely have no complaints in this regard.

As far as the host being somewhat opinionated, well that seems to go hand in
hand with the hiking community...:-).
