In the field there is a quick way to identify these immature Black Brant's.
If you can get close enough, tell the bird a joke with the word penis in it.
If it giggles with discomfort, it is an immature Black Brant.

It's an immature Black Brant - so says my Field Guide. Summers way up in
Canada's Parry Islands, and flys down the west coast usually as far as
Seattle, but as far as San Diego.
