I went up the skyline trail from palm springs on wednesday and there was hard snow starting at about 6800 feet in the north facing gullies. I had crampons which were definitely needed. The view from the tram showed complete snow coverage. If you are going to the peak I would recommend ice axe and crampons but the temperatures are warming up.
