FYI: The Whitney Portal Preserve Project is still moving ahead.   This is a 
housing development off the Mt. Whitney Road in a sagebrush  area.  The 
developer has to more fully address some issues, but the  idea is to build over 50 
homes along the Portal Road leading up to the Portal  parking lot.
 
Going up the road, I think the location is just after you come out of the  
Alabama Hills and the road opens up into the sagebrush county on the south side  
of the road and hills are on the north side of the road.
