Good evening, Cypress,

The best use of an ice axe is to cut steps or to perform an arrest in 
relatively firm, late-season, coalesced pack snow.  Early season snow, like 
what you may find in October, is usually the light, fluffy stuff for which 
an ice axe is mostly ineffective.
