[pct-l] RECORD SECTION HIKES

Dear Donna,

You can make a point without this ranting.

"How creepy to have people you don't know monitoring
your progress."

People, some of them not creeps, have been publicly
reporting, on this list and in other places, the
progress of hikers for a long time. It is reasonable
to assume that if I put my name on a register, the
information I put there is public.

" . . . absurd."

"To those who wish to monitor this type of
information, I say, "get a life and leave the hikers
in peace!"

People have different interests. And different uses of
information.

And to those who judge harshly, I suggest they get off
their high horse.

Want privacy? Be private. I shared a campsite in the
Sierra in 2004 with a hiker whose name I had not seen
on a register. When I mentioned this, he said he
wished to leave no trace. And of course I had to
suggest his trail name be just that, "No Trace". He
liked that. He was gone like the wind the next
morning.

Best,
J J
