[pct-l] Start off in April, first time

I am planning a departure from Big Bear Lake CA, my first thru hike. My planned departure would be April. Is this a good time to depart? will I be able to navigate through the Sierras?  I am also looking for a partner to go with, is it normal for people to complete this Trek solo? I have been contemplating a solo trek if I cannot find a partner.
