[pct-l] Pct-l Digest, Vol 2, Issue 6

>From my experience, June 15 is too early to hike NOBO from Etna. The trail
will be buried in snow and there are very steep drop offs. I tried it
witihout crampons and ice axe a few years ago and had to bail out after four
days. Also, the trail just south of the CA/OR border to Mt Ashland was
totally buried (I did it SOBO) and we had to follow roads and ridge contours
to get down to Siead Valley. I would wait till July 1st, snow conditions
permitting.

Kathi,

If you want your hike enough you will make it happen. I worked two 50
hour/week jobs for 6 months and other than hiking stuff I didn't spend money
other than at the grocery store and on rent. I saved up enough money in
that six months (working crappy jobs, really) that i was able to afford a
half-thru hike of the AT before I headed out west, and still had leftover
money to put towards the CDT when I got back. It's like anything-if you
want it enough you'll do what is necessary to get it.

I know several hikers that owned their own business, and when they went away
to hike they had another person run it. When they returned, they realized
that their presence was not necessary for their business to run, and were
able to pretty much retire right then and there.

I also hiked on the cheap--I bought in bulk and did maildrops (USPS flat
rate boxes), didn't eat out, didn't stay in hotels/hostels, and generally
didn't even go into towns for the majority of my hike.

You can easily hike, gear, airfare/transportation and all for $4000. Saving
up $4000 over 6 months is not difficult at all. I'd make sure to save up
enough money that you can afford good gear though (And make sure you get
good stuff the first time so you don't have to waste money re-buying. You
also want to be comfortable enough in the mountains that you won't have any
desire to check into a hotel.).

Hello All

I have been a long time "watcher" of the PCT-l. I was hoping to be able

to do a thru-hike of the trail in 2008 but my life is not coming

together in a way that makes it possible. I have had the dream since I

was about 20 (I'm 41 now) and I just can't get it out of my mind.

I would love to hear how other people have been able to manage their

life to make their dream come true. I own a small business and am

finding it hard to 1) save the money needed; and 2) get the time off

from owning/operating my business. If you have a similar situation I

would appreciate hearing how you are making it happen for yourself. I

really would like to thru-hike rather than section for many reasons. I

got Yogi's book last year and read through that and saw how some people

did it. I would like to hear more stories if you've got 'em.<br>

 James,

I haven't been there since 01, but I recall that the trailhead that takes
you out to the northern terminus of the pct is near the Manning Park Lodge.

Turn off the main highway near the lodge, and you should see the parking
lot
for the trailhead in just a minute or two. If you don't find it ask at the
lodge they should be able to point you in the right direction.

I believe the hike to the border is about 10 miles.

 Carl

I hiked from Mex > Etna this year and hope to finish next year (had to get
off due to foot pain). I was hoping to leave northbound from Etna on June
15 or thereabouts.

I am totally unfamiliar with weather/snow conditions for this time of year
in OR/WA. Is it unrealistic to leave at this time? Will I be slogging
through snow? Those on the list more familiar with conditions at this time
of year, please weigh in. I expect to hit the OR/WA border around July 15,
and Canadian border by mid-August. Thanks for your help,
Bounty Hunter

Hi all:

Thanks for your replies to my first email. I want to open another can
of worms: when I first noticed the thru-hikers typical miles per day
(20, right?), I thought that was a little much for me (because I'd
really, really like to take my time in this thing, and I'm not an pro
backpacker). Now, I know the seasons don't really allow us to take too
much time, and there is that perfect window b/t May & late September.
Well, has anyone, or have you heard of anyone, stayed on the trail for
an extended period of time? As in, hiking half the trail, then
spending the winter in a trailtown, or when the northern snow melts
off in late July? As in, hiking 2/3rds of the trail then resting until
Spring. And, I'm curious to know if the answer for me is to leave
earlier in the year, so instead of May it would be leaving Campo in,
say, March -- maybe February -- to give myself plenty of time before
Winter comes. Oh the questions, the questions...!

For now,

Jon

It is very sad to hear about the Kennedy Meadows Resort fire. We had dinner

there two days ago, on Saturday. The people were very friendly and

unexpectedly helpful. It was an amazing complex.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how good the USDA Forest Service maps are? And
if they are worth it, how do I find all 10 of them? All I can find of them
are 2 for CA, 2 for OR, and 2 for WA.
Thanks, Pogo

Strider writes: The trail Pirate did show up,?Yogi didn't show anybody her
bellybutton,?the camaraderie overshadowed the low attendance,?the snow on
Saturday morning and the bear's surprise package left Sunday were the
crowning events, outside of the huge triple crown awardees numbers.

As for Switchback's request to start a new chapter of ALDHA-West;
"ASDHA-West", this has not been discussed with the board yet, and well,
frankly, I'm just a little bit bored too! (huh?)

Switchback replies: Yes, once again the Trail Pirate, has been?attacked and
besmirched.? An accurate and historic account has been questioned and
belittled.?As with all great artist, I will be appreciated after I have gone
to the great trail in the sky.? The trail without end or beginning.? I thank
you.?
