I've wondered while reading trailjournals, guidebooks,
and the PCT Planner, why it seems nobody goes into
Government Camp instead. It's 6 miles off trail on a
major highway...maybe it has a lousy resupply
selection? But, it breaks up the spacing between Big
Lake Youth Camp (or Bend, or Elk Lake) and Cascade
Locks well, has a post office that doesn't charge for
package pickup (doesn't Timberline charge?), and last
i heard don't they also have a brewpub in Government
Camp? Seems like a viable way to do it would be to
skip Ollalie and just get breakfast at Timberline, but
send your package to Government Camp.
About CA relocation, it sounds like it depends on what
you want. Arcata has more small-town cool, Chico is
funkier and hip, and Fresno is just bigger. Arcata
has the worst weather of the 3, Fresno sees by far the
least rain. If it were up to me, i'd probably pick
Chico by myself, Arcata if i could take friends with
me, and Fresno if was serious about getting into the
High Sierra several times a year.
