Yep!  I got a really nice email from Jim (Geek) this morning and I hate to say it, but he says he wouldn't take a pet on the trail again.  Point noted:  He made the whole AT with his cat Ziggy, he attempted a thru on the PCT without his cat and didn't make it...........hehehe

See???  If I leave my pup at home, it will ruin my thru next year!!!  ;-O

Wow!  Thanks Craig!  I would sure like to talk to Geek, if anyone else has more contact info.  My main sources of info on dogs and hiking has been Deems and a lady that hikes with her dog, that Radar referred me to.
  
 I should say (and here come the flames, I can see it now....) that I think the theory of dogs disturbing wildlife, etc is highly overstated......Last summer I did a day hike in an area that disallowed dogs for that reason.  So, as I hiked alone, I was struck by a blinding noise long before I saw the cause......then all of a sudden, here comes a HUGE tractor toward me, down the same trail I was hiking.....loaded down with about 8 teenagers hoopin' and hollerin'.  Gosh....good thing THAT doesn't disturb the wildlife!!!  But that's ok, because they're PEOPLE!!  A few feet further was a family with young kids, off trail thrashing around in the woods, screaming and clapping their hands, etc.....same theory there.  I walked the trail seeing all the litter....food wrappers, cigarette butts, beer cans, etc., left behind by people.  I assure you my dog behaves better on trails than a lot of those people.  And, my dog is under my control AT ALL TIMES.  He is leased and he's not a
 barker or biter.  And for those dogs that ARE barkers, their is those mesh muzzles that can be used.  
  
 We now allow people to bring their pets from home into hospitals to visit their family members.  We also have "pet volunteers" that come into the hospitals and cheer up the sick.  I hope with time, the laws regarding pets on trails will soften.  I do NOT appreciate pets on trails, or anywhere else that are not leased and under their owner's control.  I think thats bad PR for the rest of us.  But for most of us, our pets ARE family members and we want to be able to have them along when possible. 
  
 In the meantime, it is imperative that pet owners abide by NP rules, etc.  But if hospitals can soften their stance, maybe in time, so can public trails.
