I VIEW DISCOURAGING THE USE OF A BEAR CANISTER AS UNETHICAL.
I feel complete and accurate legal data should be presented freely, quickly, 
accurately and clearly to any inquiring party in this country.  This an 
attempt to gather legal data that has not, to my knowledge, been so 
presented and NOT an attempt to discourage the use of bear canisters.

According to what we have collected on the PCT-L, hard written and printed 
data only (no hearsay)  Sierra/PCT food storage requirements:

There are regulations requiring a legal and responsible form of  food 
storage in all area on the PCT through the Sierras..

>From Piute Pass through King's Canyon ALL the way south on the PCT bear 
canisters and bear boxes are the only legal method to store food while 
camping in specified areas.  All of these areas have a bear box within reach 
of a thru-hikers pace and the bear box is also a legal food storage method.

North of Kings Canyon from Piute Pass almost to Lake Virginia (31 miles) 
bear bagging or cannisters are required.

Just before Lake Virginia to just after Duck Lake (4.8 mile stretch) 
canisters are the only legal method for camping.

>From just past Duck Lake to a point on the trail southwest of The Thumb 
there is a stretch (6 miles)where bagging or canisters are required.

>From that point north over Red Cone to Rainbow Falls area (4 miles) camping 
is permissable only with a canister.

>From Rainbow falls north through Red's Meadow we found no regulations 
requiring only canisters for camping, but bear boxes are available at Red's 
Meadow.

>From Agnew Meadow 25 trail miles north to Tuolumne Meadows Campground bear 
boxes at Highway 120, canisters are the only method permissible for camping 
because there are NO bear boxes.
