[pct-l] 1st day

I hiked the PCT from about Spitler Peak (mile 166) to Saddle Junction (mile
178.6) on 2/16 - 2/18. There was surprisingly very little snow and or water
for that time of year in the San Jacinto Range. We had to drop down to
Apache Spring to get water out of the spring or melt snow. We choose the
drop to the spring. Also we had no real snow to speak of until we rounded
the backside of Red Tahquitz. We did run into some snow on the north faces
as we made the climb up the trail to the Tahquitz plateau. We did bring
crampons but did not need to use them. There has been one storm since our
trek, but it did not drop a significant amount of snow. At the time of our
trek there was no water running in the Tahquitz Creek, we had to use the
spring in Tahquitz Meadow for water or melt snow! Unless things get wet
soon, I fear it is going to be a dry year in SoCal.

I just got an email saying there was no water at Hauser on February 24.
That is not encouraging.
