[pct-l] The Herd is a FACT...

On the AT there is some "bunching up" that occurs at various spots on the trail but it is really hit/miss due to the range of starting dates and longer weather window. If you start in February (or before) you can pretty much count on having it all to yourself. Of course the snow in north GA and the Smokies and slow you down to the point that the earlier start can be negated in the end.

If you start in March/early April and hike an "average pace" you can count on seeing dozens of hikers on the trail. Shelters are typcially full every night and there are lots of hikers wandering around the initial towns along the trail.

Hikers who hold off until late April/early May are typcially the faster hikers and catch up to and pass many of the hikers who started earlier.

Those are generalizations ...but pretty safe ones.

Doesn't the AT have multiple problems with this Herd affect, and there Big
party is much later in the hike?
