After thousands of PCT hikers have reached the completion of their long adventure on the Canadian border at Monument 78, some may be surprised that this was not the recommended place to be rejoicing their well earned personal accomplishments ..

"Mile Post Monument 78 on the US-Canadian border then was not in "civilization. It is deep in the Cascades in a beautiful wilderness.
The 40th relay camped the evening of August 4th, 1938 at Three Fools Creek north of Hopkins Pass. Since this was close to the border (about 5 miles as a crow flies) it was decided to take only lunch packs and spend August 5th locating Monument 78 and return to the camp on Three Fool's Creek.
The steep terrain and the heavy brush made it necessary to frequently wade waist deep into the icy water of the stream.
Because of the rough country and fighting the brush the party did not reach the Monument until after 4 o'clock in the afternoon.
It was decided to climb and go along a ridge on the return trip to camp in order to get up in the open to hike by moonlight. It took five hours to return from the border late that night.
On August 6th they began hiking westward towards Shuksan from where the relay team would be taken by automobile to Blaine , Washington, for the International Ceremony marking the completion of the first exploration of the Pacific Crest Trail.
The Forest Service has since recommended that the Northern terminus be established a little farther East at Monument 83 to meet with trails in Canada which are open to foot and horse travel."
