[pct-l] device advice

The PCT tread is not always visible in June in the Sierra where it is under 
snow or water or trails of earlier hikers have melted out. We used the Tom 
Harrison map packs and a wrist compass for sighting the correct pass ahead.

Would others agree with this?  Would it likely hold true in June, in

Thinking about 2008 thru, but lacking navigation or snow experience.
Figure mtnned's training can help w/snow...
