Hi Brian and all,
I section hiked Oregon last August North to South. The resupply
points in Oregon are really small resorts where there is no fuel
unless there is something in the hiker box. The exception is Sisters
and a long hitch to Bend. You should be able to include fuel in your
resupply boxes if you are mailing by ground shipping. Ask at the post
office to make sure.
I read on the PCTA that the MacKenzie highway will be closed for part
of the summer which means that the Santiam Hwy will be your only
access to Sisters. If you don't want to deal with hitching to
Sisters, ship your resupply to Big Lake Camp which is just off the
trail about 5 miles S of the Santiam Hwy. The people there are super
helpful and if you arrive during mealtime, you can dine with them-
all you can eat yummie veggie food for a small donation. They also
have showers and laundry. Last summer, they just closed the trail due
to fire when I got to Big Lake so one of the staff members gave me a
ride to Sisters. The whole staff there seems really supportive of the
PCT community.
The Oregon section is great in August. I would recommend heading
south because, with luck, you will avoid the bugs. I only had maybe a
day around the Sisters where the mosquitos were annoying. Also, if
you head south in August, you will meet most of the thru- hikers
which is really neat. I learned alot about gear and trail life from
the many conversations I had on the trail. I also passed on news
regarding fire closures, water issues and where everybody was- my
small contribution to the trail.
Hope this helps,
Piroska
