One option is to start your hike at Walker Pass instead. This only adds 2
days to your 3-month hike, and lets you experience the transition from dry
hills to the sierras. You can take a buses from Bakersfield as far as Onyx,
then hitching the remaining distance isn't that hard.

my husband and I are starting a 3 month long section hike next week from
Kennedy Meadows.  We are looking for a means of transportation to the
trailhead on monday afternoon....we heard that it's very hard to hitch to
and don't want to spend 100 dollars on a cab....any suggestions??
