poles helps me hike more efficiently, by reducing the 'sway'
encountered when transferring weight from one leg to another, which reduces
the amount that my torso dips on each step. I would make a WAG that I
average about five to ten percent of my load being transferred to my poles, and
while just a little, it still makes a goodly difference over the long haul,
especially as my back has gotten older.

I agree. Hiking poles are mainly for balance and some load carrying help.
Sometimes when I move my head quickly on the trail, I momentarily loose my
balance. Nothing serious, just a second or two. With poles I have no problem
at all. They automatically steady me and I continue on.
But you must remember I plan to hike with a Monaco Signature Series motor
coach for my slack packing support. I will really not have a lot of pack load
problems.
I thank you. Switchback the Coach
