[pct-l] The PCT - Why so many lists?

Five years+ ago, Ryan (the kind soul who hosts the backcountry.net lists of AT-L, PCT-L, CDT-L, etc.) had online forums.
They were hardly used for whatever reason. Ryan took them down.
Five years later, forums seems to be more popular than list servs.
But, it is a lot of work to get a forum up and running AND active.
Adventureonthepct.com is a nice little site. Just not used much.
Then again, perhaps us Westerners are a bit more free spirited than Easterners and don't want a central repository for everything? :)
(So typed this guy from the Northeast orginally...)
In all seriousness, I am not sure why there are so many lists. I do know an on-line type forum was tried for the XYZ-L lists and they were not popular at the time.
