Independence? 4th of July? Is that Independence, Oregon or Indendence, California? (Independence, Oregon is nowhere near the PCT ... maybe 50 miles away by car, I'm guessing) I was in Independence, Oregon on the 4th of July in 2006, only I was in a canoe, in the middle of a 100 mile canoe trip on the Willamette River in Oregon. Can't wait to do that trip again!

Because of all the snow in the Sierras (and in the PNW) last year, the bulk of the hiker pack was still in California in July. There was a massive crowd in Independence for last year's 4th of July, with the main pack just a few weeks north of there.

This year is quite different, to say the least.

It might have been too early for the thru hikes, though, and since they would have been going in my same direction, they could have been all around me and I just didn't see them.
