Greetings,

More specifically the PCT crosses I 10 just west ( a few blocks) of the
Verbena Rd. exit by passing through a culvert under the highway.

Hi Gang......I'm back.....by popular demand......for a limited time only!!!

Switchback,
The last time I communicated with Scott he was on his way to Canada for his
PCT honey-moon thru-hike starting 6-29-07.
How romantic........''LOVE on the PCT''........or shall we say Honey-moon
trail?......can't get any more romantic than that.

Switchback, we have to get busy marking campsites along the
trail.....reserved for Scott & Michelle....reserved for
honey-mooners......love nest-reserved for love birds.

Maybe we can scatter some rose paddles in the reserved honey-moon sites....
you know to make it a little more romantic.....to get Scott in the ahhh,
ahhh, proper mood after a hard day on the trail.

Greetings everyone.

I was looking at the various maps of the trail, trying to find out if it
crosses Highway 10 between Palmsprings and Los Angeles.

Can anyone help me to determine where this crossing is?

  Thanks.

Actually, I would help with paying the bill for them to stay at the Dow
Villas Motel in Lone Pine when they come south. They could come out at
Kearsarge
Pass or the Mt. Whitney trail and be picked and take a few zero days before

heading back in. It would be lots of fun to go over to Lone Pine to party
with them. I wonder if anyone else would want to join in on this if they
want
to do it.

I had mentioned previously that I would have SuperSecrets of Backpacking
consolidated into one topic post over at PostHoler.com and Switchback
Unchained
by the end of June. I will now try to do this in early July. Sorry for
the
delay, but I have been goofing off.

I also want to thank the thousands of folks who have read my topic posts
and
humor over there. It has been a blast for year I have been doing this.

I thank you.

"I read on the PCTA that the MacKenzie highway will be closed for part
of the summer which means that the Santiam Hwy will be your only
access to Sisters."

I was just up there and though the road is closed part way up, you can still
get from Sisters to the trailhead on McKenzie Hwy (242). you just can't get
to Eugene or points west on 242. though most north-bounders will probably be
there after the construction is finished anyways

Hi Kim,

When are you planning to hike the PCT?
Most people who hike the PCT go for trail runners instead of boots.
Lighter shoes are usually enough, unless you go so early in the
season that you will be hiking on/in snow for a long time and
chopping steps with your boots...
Most of the PCT is relatively dry, so you definitely don't need shoes
with goretex or other waterproofing.

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Saskia / Sauce

I'll echo what Saskia said and offer that the vast majority of the hikers we
see are wearing trail runners. New Balance is a very popular brand, but
then so is Montrail, Vasque, and Solomon. The list goes on.

We also see boots worn, by not many but some. And then there's an even
smaller handful of those who wear my favorite trail footwear: hiking
sandals. I'm a huge Chaco fan, which I wear with socks. They are awesome
for just walking through stream crossings, provided excellent grip and shock
absorption.

Hikers also bring camp shoes (another reason I like Chacos -- they cover
both bases). The hands-down most popular camp shoes are Crocs, which are
decent to hike in for a short stretch. Flip-flops, including homemade
varieties made out of insole liners and some shoe laces or such, are also
common. We like Crocs and wear them around home, but I really didn't care
for them for stream crossings. They were too buoyant, squishy, and felt
like they were going to come off in the swift currents. The Chacos
performed splendidly under these same conditions. Trail runners would also.

Shoes get discussed quite a bit on this list, and you'll find a treasure
trove of brand/model discussions in the PCT-L archives. Also, if you're
wanting opinions on gear, I would highly recommend getting Yogi's PCT
Handbook www.pcthandbook.com . In it she provides the opinions of different
hikers on just about every piece of gear or preferred practices you can
imagine. The on-trail pages are also very helpful and as current as
anything available today.

Good luck with your decision. Half the fun is the planning and preparation,
and all the anticipation. Enjoy.

L-Rod
