I am not a bear expert, but I have heard that many bears
recognize the odor of gun oil and avoid it.

The biggest difficulty with answering questions on bears is
that they are almost as different and individual as humans,
requiring any piece of expertise to be heavily qualified in
this manner: it might work with some bears most of the time
if you are lucky and choose the right bear.

IOW, don't bet the farm.
