[pct-l] Water filters/purification

I may have missed this discussion somewhere but what is the consensus (Ha! 
Is there ever a consensus on this listserv?) on water 
purification/filtration methods for the PCT.  I have a Katadyn Hiker filter 
and Aquamira.  Is a filter necessary?
