>This is an excellent suggestion. I visited the
Big Trees State Park
last
June. If memory recalls there is a grove that is
7 road miles or so
back
into the park and then a couple mile hike from
the trailhead. If you
can
make the side trip, it is worth it to visit these
groves since they
are in a
more natural/remote setting than others.

Wandering Boy

That sounds like the South Grove, which is a
goodly drive across the North Fork Stanislaus
River. The trail at this grove is rough-ish by
park standards, but still a cake-walk for a
now-seasoned through-hiker. It has trees, both
of S. giganteum and Pinus lambertiana, that are
slightly larger than those at the North Grove.
The NG is barely a mile off the highway. Its
trail is pretty darned close to level, having
been designed for wheelchair access. For those
used to screaming down backcountry trails, the
North Grove loop will be a test of patience, as
you'll want to consciously slow down in order to
appreciate these trees.
