An advantage to hiking alone (or with someone with whom you're very comfortable) and before or after most people's summer vacations is that if it's warm enough you can keep all your clothes dry by just taking them off and putting them in your pack. Hiking nude in reasonably warm rain is the best solution I've come up with, and it washes off some of the trail grime.
