See REI.com and put into the search engine the term "Gortex socks" and some
options will come up.

Rain, cold, and wind are very tricky on the trail. Usually, a hiker has
gear to take care of these things in their kit. The key is using them in a
timely manner. I have had the same problem too. I think I get fooled by the
slow, but steady changes that take place while hiking.

In just 30 minutes it can go from okay to danger. I have gone from okay to
first stage hypothermia in 10 minutes in the Sierras. This happened to me
when I stopped hiking to take a break at a much lower altitude after going over
a pass in a snow storm. It was kind of "cool", since the snow was blowing
up and not down. I remember thinking to myself, "Now, this is something I did
not plan for. Snow blowing up into my nose." It took me a few hours in the
tent and bag to warm up again. Very weird and scary.
