Personally, I would not worry too much able cats. Yes, of course they are out there; that's a give. You say there was another sighting; maybe this is this one some others have all ready made reference to; not a new sighting. Remember, this list represent such a small percentage of the number of serious hikers in the US as to be barely a blimp on the screen! 

I do not have as many miles on the trail as some folks on the list but I like to think I am more a voice of reason rather than focused about dangers on the trail. I hike alone almost always and, other than stupid mistakes I have made, I have never been in danger on the trail. I have never seen a cat on the 600 or more miles I've hiked. I know others have.

Take your experience and enthusiasm and have fun.  Do a little reading (A Falcon Guide print good little guide books on lions and other critters); be aware, not afraid. The pct is a safe place...Mother Nature can be trusted.  :)
