[pct-l] walking poles

I used old ski poles for years until I bought a tent (Wanderlust Nomad)
that required adjustable poles. Now I find adjustable poles make all my
tents easier to set up. I usually set them at 135cm for hiking but my
tents need different lengths - one needs 140cm and another 125cm. The
adjustable hiking poles save carrying the weight of tent poles and help
with my bad knees and back.

I currently have the REI carbon fiber poles. I haven't broke them yet,
but when I questioned the REI sales guy he said if I ever break them
just bring them back, so it's really a one-time purchase for a lifetime
of use - and they were on sale.

Only once was I worried about carrying lightning rods - one Italy Pass
in the Sierra, where I chucked my ice axe down the hill every time my
hair stood up, running down to retrieve it and repeat the process after
dodging each lightning bolt.

I use jointed poles, but the feature is a bit of a waste because the
only time I changed the length was when I fully collapsed them for
hitchhiking.
