[pct-l] How early is to early to start a thru hike?

I am in the very preliminary planning for a 2009 thru hike.  My partner needs to begin the hike in mid April.  This concerns me because of the Sierra snowpack. Does anyone have any insight to helping us with the decision to go at this time of year.   Thanks
