"Don't ever wear waterproof socks in freezing conditions. It was only about
20 degrees."

I too thank you for sharing all of these details. Best way to learn is
through the experience of others (I'd just as soon avoid learning via
personal experience with frostbite!).

My current plan is to use trail runners and goretex socks in the Sierras
next year, wool socks under the goretex socks, and switch to VB socks if
temps get low enough. So your comment about "waterproof socks" definitely
caught my attention.

It would be very interesting to know what type of waterproof socks were used
--- goretex, neoprene, VB, etc, what kind of shoes or boots, what sock
layering there was and in what order (wool socks inside or outside the
waterproof socks?), and what kind of gaitors (impacts water getting in from
the tops of the socks).

I wonder what sort of shoe/boot plus sock combination would have been more
optimal for those conditions? Did not the others also get wet inside their
footwear in such conditions?

I know you didn't arrange this as a scientific experiment (!), but any
additional data would be appreciated. And of course, best of luck in full
recovery of your feet!
