Think about this very carefully.

If you only need a bear canister ONCE to cover a given section of the PCT, then rentals are by far your smartest, easiest, and most economical deal. Whatever they charge, pay it and shut up.

BUT, if you anticipate two or more treks into areas where canisters are required, you are probably better off to buy the darn thing so you can do what you want to with it, whenever you decide to do so.

Besides, you can always sell it on this list forum or the appropriate Yahoo Groups when you no longer need it.
