[pct-l] Popcorn on the PCTSWITCHBACK,
When is the last time you tied the cord off to another tree in the Sierra
without getting wiped out.
The bears are to smart for that.
They have become educated......some are even Harvard graduates.
If you are going to string, counter balance is the only way......the
trouble, most hikers don't know how to properly
counter balance.
A WORD OF CAUTION.......If you are going to urinate around the tree, do
not take your ''Viagra'' pills.
There is nothing more dangerous than a aroused bear.

Say, I
was wondering how are you going to cram all that buttered pop corn in your
bear
canister?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Switchback the Can replies: Ha, ha, ha. I have my own technique of using
bear canisters. I use the light weight BearVault Solo canister when
required.
It easily fits into my 18 ounce Breeze pack. No problem.
I pack it with most of my foods. There is enough food in it, so if I get
wiped out by a bear I can easily make it out of the Sierras or to the next
resupply point. The other food I just hang from a tree and tie the cord
off on
another tree. I keep a clean campsite and have never had a bear get my
food
in 40 years of hard core hiker trash backpacking.
I also urinate around the two trees to let them know it is Switchback the
Trail Pirate they are dealing with and to beware. This is probably what
really
does the trick in keeping bears away. I have not only a reputation in the
hiking community, but in the wilds too. For different reasons hikers
usually
try to avoid me and the same is true for bears. My legend is the result of
decades of bear encounters. This knowledge has been passed down through
countless bear generations from the older bears to the younger bucks just
starting
their pillaging life style.
For the bags of popcorn on the Mt. Whitney Expedition, I will just put them
in my large pack netting pocket. I thank you.
