That is an excellent idea.   Except I am lazy.  The only thing I do is just 
keep most things in ZipLock  bags with the name and weight of the item. That is 
good for keeping tract  of things and water proofness.  ZipLock bags are so 
cheap that it is easy  to replace them for each hike.  I put a piece of clear 
tape over the item  name and weight, so it does not rub off.  Works  great. 
 
The other thing I do is just dump  everything in my freestanding tent.  Then 
I know that nothing it laying  around the campsite.  This has always worked 
well.  The problem I  have is to be careful at rest stops.  I always do a check 
around  before I hit the trail again. 
 
At least the PCT does not have the situation the AT has with so much gear  
being dumped in the first 40 miles from Springer Mountain.
