Marta,

Three little handbooks I like, all by Philip A. Munz (and they're available
used, for CHEAP!). There are newer versions available - if you go to
Amazon.com and do a search on Philip A. Munz you'll get the full assortment
available. Munz was rather a renowned botanist who published the major
botanic keys for California that were used until replaced the Jepson Manual
(much, much too heavy to carry in a backpack, and you'll never hike anywhere
if you spend your time keying plants :) ).

California Mountain Wildflowers:

010/ref=sr_1_1/103-4100778-2417401?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176490306&sr=8-1

California Desert Wildflowers:
http://www.amazon.com/California-Desert-Wildflowers-Philip-Munz/dp/B000IW6N2
4/ref=sr_1_13/103-4100778-2417401?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176490709&sr=1-13

California Spring Wildflowers:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000IW3HL4/ref=sr_1_olp_20/103-410077
8-2417401?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176490830&sr=1-20

If you're botanically cognizant (i.e. can follow a botanical key and don't
mind black&white line drawings, there's the nice compact handbook:

A Sierra Nevada Flora by Norm Weeden:
http://www.amazon.com/Sierra-Nevada-Flora-Norman-Weeden/dp/0899972047/ref=sr
_1_1/103-4100778-2417401?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176491079&sr=1-1

Have fun!

Marta,
I have the Sierra Birds book by John Muir Laws - and it is really
fantastic. It is light enough to carry with you. I don't know about his
other guide, but I am planning on getting it also because the first one is
so good. I have some wildflower books too, but I have to go home and look
at my library so I can remember the titles (I'm at that age!).

As an ignorant easterner heading to the Sierras for
the first time, I'm sure I won't know the names of
almost any birds or plants I'll see there. Does
anyone have recommendations for ID books that are not
too heavy to carry in the backpack, but inclusive
enough to be useful?
