  I was wondering if it would be okay for folks to meet someone doing this along the way.  Just to make sure the runner/hiker is doing okay and not pushing too much.  That would still be unsupported, I think.  

  It seems a safety check by others at maybe three spots along the trail would be smart.  He would not have to stop for more than 2 minutes to say hello and let everyone know he is fine.  May be these would be nap spots too.
