In digging through stacks of old saved articles, I found an item today that
reminded me of the recent question as to whether someone MIGHT have hiked
the JMT in less than 5 days.  In an article by Bob Cooper, "Hit the Trail
Running,"  High Country section, Sports Afield, March, 1998, p.77, Cooper
states , "Using this part-hike, part-jog, [Jim] Knight set the 211-mile John
Muir Trail speed record of four and a half days.

It is also stated that Jim Knight coined the phrase, "fastpacking," in an
article he wrote about hiking 100 miles of the Wind River Range in a weekend
in 1987.  The author, Bob Cooper, further mentions that he himself had hiked
the Tahoe-Yosemite Trail (170 miles) in four days in 1979, "eight years
before anyone uttered the term 'fastpacking'."
