Dogs are prohibited from the trail well before that. It starts just north of
Mt. Laguna where the PCT enters the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park where,
like all California parks, dogs are banned from trails. Then there's San
Jacinto Wilderness State Park, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National
Parks, and more. Further north Burney Falls and Castle Crags State Parks
(might be easy to road walk with the dog around those) and Crater Lake NP.
I'll let others take on the pros and cons about dogs on thruhikes, but do
consider carefully the posts already made about first-hand experiences. I
met Darrell at Cajon Pass shortly after he sent Sitka home, missing Sitka a
lot but knowing it was best for his best friend.
