This is one of those hot-button topics that have caused huge arguments
in the past.  I think the best summary is that while it's not impossible
to do long-distance hiking with a dog and a few people have successfully
done it, it's a _lot_ harder on the dog than most people imagine so a
lot of folks on the pct-l list discourage the idea.

I'll dig around and try to find some resource links from previous
threads on the subject.
