I have hung food caches from trees along the PCT and never had a problem 
with bears.  I wrap the food with a couple plastic bags, then a piece of 
screen (for varmints) and then duct tape.  Walk 100' into the forest 
from a trailhead and find a good limb.  I did part of the tahoe rim 
trail one year and stashed both food and water near road crossings.  it 
was so nice never carrying more than two or two and a half day's worth 
of food.
