It saddens me to hear that we are such purest that we can't remember a man that gave so much to "The Trail" Is it so much about our own hike that we can't take a minute to recognize a fallen fellow hiker? Has anyone taken the time to ask his wife what she feels his desire would have been? Has everyone forgot that the mountains can be dangerous and need to recognize as such? Being a wife of a mountaineer who hiked the trail before it was even a completed trail and a section hiker myself (JMT 1984 and on) I would be deeply dishearten to hear others not wanting to recognize his love of the Sierras and the PCT. Without the ones who have gone before, you would not have a Trail to follow.

Subject: RE: [pct2006] Re: Ray Memorial
I'm not writing this to inflame anything (please don't hate me!), but rather
because what is discussed in this group impacts hikers in the coming years
(I'll be hiking in 2007) and I'd like to be able to have my input
recognized.
I have to agree with Jeff and his argument (particularly about deciding who
earns memorials and who does not), however there is another piece of the
story for me. I think remembering people is important, but I would prefer to
keep memorials off the trail. I'll be hiking next year in part because I
want to be in the wilderness. Plaques, benches, and such take away from
that experience (at least for me). I think to imagine that the people for
whom these memorials would be placed would also want to retain that same
wild character.
I think it's great to find ways to remember the people who are lost to us
during their time on the trail. Their lives are important, and their
absence brings a lot of pain to this community. However, I would hope that
it might be possible to find a way to remember them that might also pay
honor to wanderlust-filled spirits and the love of the wilderness and
hiking.
Hope I don't sound cold-hearted. My intention is not to discourage
remembering
