The problem is that there are those who do not posses the intellectual
discipline to keep from turning loose their divisive political bile and
invective when such subjects come up.  As a result, they tend to use it as a
pissing ground to air whatever emotional turmoil they have bottled up over
(insert politician here).

It would be nice if people were able to be civilized about it, but such is
rare to the point of being near non-existence.
