Jane,

It looks like bear-resistant canisters are required once you hit the
Cottonwood Pass region - see
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/bear.shtml for specifics (maps,
recommended containers, etc.). I'd suggest renting a lightweight Bearikade
from Wild Ideas if you don't already own one. If you pack correctly, you
should be able to get about 10 days worth of food in the standard size
container (I did, but I have small feet ;-) and can compress the contents by
standing inside the container....). See
http://www.wild-ideas.net/index2.html for details and links to their rental
page. Their service is phenomenal, and their delivery swift.

Hanging *might* be sufficient for Section G - but frankly, it's so nice to
be able to sleep at night, knowing your food is reasonably safe from
uninvited guests.

The BearVault is a good lightweight option if you want to buy a canister -
but the Bearikade's even lighter, and I think it packs more efficiently.

I'll be heading out in a couple of weeks to do this section and thereby
complete my 10-year quest of the PCT - coming out through Mt. Whitney. My
question is: Are bear canisters required (or advised) or would hanging be
sufficient? Thanks for any tips.
