Taking Marcia's cue, my dream bear canister would be:

1.Using current technology, titanium chain mail. The volume would shrink as 
items are removed and still be light.

2. Using emerging technology, a weave of carbon nano-tube material. It would 
weigh virtually nothing and change volume like a bag.

Until then, the status quo prevails.
