With any luck this won't spark another endless bear canister / ice axe
thread... but here goes...
You are required to have one on certain parts of the trail, do you need
it? No, do you need to protect the bears? Yes. I have a Bearikade
(www.wild-ideas.net) weekender.
Ice Axe, you don't need it until you do... Too late when your sliding a
mountain side down saying, "sh*& wish I had an Ice Axe!". Get one learn
how to use it, have it with you on parts of the trail that are OR could
be icy.
I've said it here before and it bears repeating, the Southern California
mountains can be treacherous, covered in sheets of ice. Several very
experienced people have been killed in recent years here discounting the
danger.
