Matt,
Paul,
To heck with your friends. Do this hike for yourself. If you want this experience to be a social experience you will have significant opportunity to meet and hike with numerous folks. Many folks have made life-long friends along the trail. Or, if you would prefer to find solitude and enjoy the trail as more of a solitary experience you can do this as well. I would not encourage you to "wait for your friends". If you do, you may find that you are not compatible along the trail anyhow.
Enjoy,
Elevator
