I was directing the thing more at those who actively promote
themselves to the hiking community and beyond for the sake
of self-justification. Is the "look what I can do" syndrome
tolerable in these fragile times? And is the
higher-faster-further message the best one to send from such
a podium?

In essence, is there a distinction between doing your thing
then getting due credit for it, and requiring credit so you
can then feel good about doing your thing.

This isn't a flame. It's just an issue... or not. Your call.
