Good evening, Squatch,
A good Forest Service road crosses the gap between Oregon and California a few hundred yards from the state boundary. If you are a GPS user, the road crosses the PCT at 42.00497N 122.91218W. Getting to that gap is a bit difficult from either state's side. If you want to approach from the Oregon side I can send you instructions and a map file. If you wish to approach from the California side I will defer to someone local, perhaps Deems Burton.
While it is never totally safe to leave a vehicle unattended, that is a lonesome spot with not a lot of traffic.
By the way, for all of you trivia buffs: The nominal Cal/Or border is 42 deg. N latitude. South of Windsor, Ont. part of Canada, Pelee Point and the Pelee Islands, extends south below the 42 deg. parallel. That means that there is a part of Canada that is further south than part of California. Weird, huh?
